Avebury stone circle is the largest stone circle in Europe. It was constructed around 2600 BCE. It comprises a large henge (a bank and a ditch) with a large outer stone circle and two separate smaller stone circles situated inside the centre of the monument, as well as remains of a stone avenue.
Avebury is my personal favourite when it comes to stone circles. It’s calmer and more accessible than stone henge, and visitors are free to wander amongst the stones. Because it’s so large it also means that even in high season you can find corners where you’ll only bump into one or two people.
Update: I’ve been going here for over 5 years now. During winter you’ll hardly pass anyone as you wander around, though summer does have the added attraction of meadow flowers. I love it all year round! On my last visit my favourite tree had become a prolific wish tree.
To get there: Park in the National Trust Car park (51°25’31.6″N 1°51’28.7″W) or layby (51°25’15.8″N 1°50’45.7″W) and do a circular walk to take in the full circle with an extra walk down the avenue.
