This beautiful island is surrounded by coastal scenery. Cut off from the world and reached by a causeway only accessible at low tide, it has a reputation as a wildlife haven and is home to a national nature reserve. As well as numerous rare birds, you may even spot the grey seals that are resident on the nearby Farne Islands all year round.
The island has much more to offer than we had time to see on our short stopover. Lindisfarne Castle and Priory are the top attractions, and a fresh crab sandwich (a Northumberland speciality) is the recommended snack.
To get here there is only one road – which is covered twice a day by the North Sea. About three miles of road can be covered by the tide but coming by car is still the easiest and most common way of visiting. Check tide times to plan your crossing and return. To get to the snook car park (55°41’05.2″N 1°50’04.4″W) cross the causeway and turn left a short distance after you cross onto the island.
