Stanage Edge is a gritstone escarpment, famous as a location for climbing

If you wander beneath many of the Peak District’s edges, you will see reminders of the area’s history – large millstones abandoned on the ground. Stanage Edge is one of those places.
Continue past the millstones and up to the top of Stanage Edge and you can wander along the ridge, soaking in the far-reaching views.
There are a couple of places along the way you can explore. The first is an unnamed ‘cave’ with fairly easy access.
The second is Robin Hood’s cave. Not knowing exactly where the cave was, we wandered further along the ridge till we found a spot we could climb down, and then doubled back and climbed up to the cave. To get out, we climbed upwards back onto the ridge. In hindsight, knowing where it was, we may have taken the route down from the top directly into the cave.
With daylight fading we made the return journey to the van, wandering slowly through the heather rather than taking the direct path.
To visit, there are multiple parking areas and layby’s, the one’s marked on the map are Upper Burbage Bridge Car Park (53°20’34.9″N 1°36’37.6″W), layby (53°20’22.5″N 1°37’17.5″W), Hooks Carr Car Park (53°20’33.0″N 1°38’01.4″W), and Hollin Bank Car Park (53°21’02.4″N 1°38’41.6″W).
