The Yorkshire Dales have many moods, from wild and windswept to tranquil. The dales include some of the finest limestone scenery in the UK, from crags and pavements to an underground labyrinth of caves. Each valley or ‘dale’ has its own distinct character, set against expansive heather moorland tops.
My son and I started off our trip by spending a couple days wandering the dales and moorlands, climbing hills, finding limestone pavements and lakes, and chasing rainbows.
If you want to experience examples of the various sceneries all packed into a couple of square miles, I recommend Malham which has Gordale Scar, the Cove and Limestone Pavements, and Janet’s Foss thrown in for good measure.
