Stanton Moor is an area of gritstone that stands between the villages of Stanton in Peak to the north and Birchover to the south. It contains the remains of 2 definite stone circles (Nine Ladies and Doll Tor) and 3 other possible circles or ring cairns (Stanton Moor North, Central and South), as well as Earl Grey Tower, and the cork stone (climb it if you can). All of these are held in an environment that changes from expansive heather views to woodland with plenty of nooks and crannies along the way.
I’ve written posts for the Nine Ladies & Earl Grey Tower, as well as Doll Tor, so this is just a quick one to show the Cork Stone and landscape. The Cork Stone is composed of weathered sandstone it resembles a huge mushroom or cork. As with the Andle Stone nearby, it has steps carved into the side to allow access to the top, though they have become worn over the years and are not quite as easy to ascend as they look.
If you want to visit the Nine Ladies and Earl Grey Tower, parking to the north near Stanton in the Peak is closer, see this post for that map. For the Cork Stone, park near Birchover to the south, see this post for the closest parking location which is also closer to Rowter Rocks, though this post shows the closest parking for that. If you like walking, parking in the car park near Birchover (53°09’30.9″N 1°38’27.5″W) seems the most central to do all the spots from.
