North Cyprus

I have very mixed feelings about Cyprus. It is to me an island of extremes; in temperatures, environments, people, architecture, everything. There's something about this experience that made seeing truths easier; I lost a part of myself here, changed forever by a different kind of war.

Cyprus, Kyrenia: Saint Hilarion Castle

Perched high in the Kyrenia mountain range, overlooking the Mediterranean and the surrounding areas of the North Cyprus landscape, stands the castle of St Hilarion. It is the best-preserved ruin of the three former strongholds in the Kyrenia mountain range. Contrary to the belief, the castle is not named after the Saint active in Palestine and Cyprus in the 4th century, but after a hermit monk…

Cyprus, Famagusta: Varosha

In 1974, Turkish troops invaded and occupied Northern Cyprus. This resulted in the displacement of tens of thousands of Greek Cypriots, who were forced to flee their homes. Hundreds of people were killed, including tourists. The resort town of Varosha became a ghost town overnight. The buildings were left abandoned and fell into disrepair.

Cyprus: Salamis Ruins

Just north of Famagusta at the base of the Karpaz Peninsula lies the remains of the city of Salamis. The capital of Cyprus as far back as 1100 BC, Salamis survived the successive occupations of the Assyrians, Egyptians, Persians, and Romans but eventually succumbed to the forces of nature when a severe earthquake destroyed the city in 76 AD,

Kent, Ashford: Godinton House Gardens

My family have a yearly ticket to Godinton House so they took me to the gardens for an afternoon. Spanning twelve acres, the gardens include a rose garden, herbaceous garden, Italian garden, walled garden, wild garden, and lily pond – all scattered with sculptures and surrounded by ancient parkland studded with stately oaks and chestnuts. To visit by car, park in the on-site car park (51°09'37.2"N…

England, Sussex: Devil’s Dyke

Part of the south downs. In summer you can find fields of wildflowers, making it a pretty walking spot, but even in winter a walk on the downs is pleasant enough. We also stumbled across an old grain barn at Saddlescombe Farm open to visitors. I got here by public transport (the 77 bus from Brighton Station seems to be the easiest route) but I believe…

England, East Sussex, Seaford: Seven Sisters Country Park and Cuckmere Haven

  • Post comments:1 Comment

The first time I came here was with my sister, we spent a gorgeous afternoon walking through the Seven Sisters Country Park and down to Cuckmere Haven. Since then I have learned the fastest route to the coast, and stop by anytime I'm in the area. I usually park near the Cuckmere Inn (50°46'24.3"N 0°08'45.3"E) and walk to the coast from there.

Spain, Andalusia, Marbella, Sierra Blanca: Mirador de los Gitanos

Today we went for a hike up the mountains, it's quite a walk from Marbella town, but to keep your eyes occupied along the way there are plenty of villas to look at. As you enter the mountain area, the temperature rises as you climb higher (though the top is windy and colder), and the views just keep getting better. There are also lots of abandoned…

England, Yorkshire Malham: Janet’s Foss

The stream flowing through Gordale scar (Gordale Beck) travels through the gorge, then flows over Janet’s Foss before joining Malham Beck a couple of miles downstream to form the River Aire. Janets Foss is a stunning little waterfall flowing into a pool and then on down a small river through the forest, creating a lovely walking route to follow, where you can find coin-studded trees, steep banks…

England, Yorkshire Malham: Malham Cove and Limestone Pavements

  • Post comments:1 Comment

Malham Cove is a natural limestone formation just north of the village of Malham. It is a large, curved limestone cliff at the head of a valley. At the top there is an area of limestone pavement, a perfect place to absorb the stunning views. Also nearby are Gordale Scar and Janet's Foss. There is a National Trust car park in Malham (54°03'36.7"N 2°09'17.1"W). Though if…
